The Skinny:
An entirely too hot race (for it to be December), but still lots
of fun and a generally challenging race on a surprisingly hilly
race course
Who Raced:
Nicol Rodgers, Scott Ash, Damon Farrar and Richard Jensrud
The "Dos Mongrels" also raced as a two-person male team: Chip
Lynch and Jon Meyers, finishing in 11:58 hours for a 6th place
overall
Favorite Part:
The scavenger hunt through Graford was a great addition ...
for some reason the town's people didn't seem to be out and
about and so we didn't really get the same participation as we had during
the Quartz, OK race in October ... although we still did get
enthusiastic salutations from an excited fan who screamed "stupid bike
riders!"
Least Favorite Part:
The extremely dry conditions ... I think the whole team had
a small bag of sand coating our lungs at race end, in addition
to the fact that every ranch road was pretty much like riding
around in circles in a sand trap at our local golf course
Funniest Moment:
My original thought for the funniest moment (see below)
doesn't even come close to this one I was just reminded of ...
after reattaching his rear wheel, Jon apparently didn't put on
his brake pads right, which resulted in him biking with the
break pads in a fully engaged position ... most of us would've
realized early and stopped to check what the heck was wrong with
our bike, but Jon is not exactly what we call a "finesse" racer
and he proceeded to bike the four miles or so roundtrip to the
canoes, and the roundtrip to Graford for the scavenger hunt with
the breaks applied ... he pedaled so hard that he actually broke
the pedal off his bike (a very nice Specialized I may add) ...
now that's brute strength
My first thought for funny moment:
CP 7 was squeezed in under a cliff, behind a large rock
formation, blocking the view from the trail we were traveling on
... as we got to the point we thought the CP should be located,
we decided that the point was likely at the top of the cliff
instead of under it and started looking around for a way to
climb up. We were traveling with a three person male team,
who spotted the point but continued to look at the cliff side
with us as one of them tried to sneak in to punch the point
(less than 50 feet away) ... luckily, Scott is fresh off police
academy training and had the point flanked ... he was standing
on the other side of the rock waiting for the other team to
clear
